The best solar generator is the one sized to your load. A solar generator is a portable power station (a battery and inverter) that recharges from solar panels. For phones, lights and a CPAP on a camping trip, a 1 kWh LiFePO4 unit covers most needs. For a fridge and internet through a daylong outage, step up to 2 kWh.

What matters when you choose a solar generator

Five numbers decide whether a unit fits. Everything else is convenience.

  • Capacity (Wh): how much energy the battery stores. This sets runtime.
  • Rated AC output (W): the continuous load the inverter can carry. It sets which appliances will start at all.
  • Surge or peak (W): the short burst allowed when a motor or compressor starts.
  • Battery chemistry and cycle rating: LiFePO4 (LFP) models in this guide are rated for 3,500 to 6,000+ cycles. Always check the capacity percentage the rating ends at.
  • Warranty terms: length, who qualifies and whether the seller is authorized.

Weight matters too if you camp or move the unit between rooms. In the 1 kWh class compared below, listed weights run from 23.8 lb to about 35.3 lb.

Which solar generator are you buying for?

The right size depends on who will use it. Start with the person, then check the numbers above.

  • A camper: a 500 Wh to 1 kWh unit with USB and 12 V outputs, plus a folding panel. Campgrounds limit generators; Yosemite allows them only at set hours, so a quiet battery unit suits campsites. Check each campground’s rules.
  • Someone who uses a CPAP: CPAP makers publish their own power options. ResMed, for example, sells an Air10 DC/DC converter that runs its AirSense 10 and AirCurve 10 machines from a 12 V or 24 V DC source. Ready.gov advises talking to a medical provider about an outage plan for powered medical devices.
  • A prepper or outage planner: 2 kWh or more to keep a fridge, lights and internet going.
  • A balcony renter: a unit plus a folding panel needs no wiring. Plug-in balcony kits are a different product that shuts off in a blackout.
  • An RV owner or van-lifer: 2 kWh and up, and possibly a TT-30 outlet, the 120 V, 30 amp RV plug. Check the inverter’s rated output against the rig’s loads.

How much capacity does your solar generator need?

Start with watt-hours: watts multiplied by hours of use. Then allow for conversion losses. EcoFlow’s runtime guide suggests multiplying battery capacity by 0.80 to 0.90 for AC loads as a first estimate, so a 1,024 Wh battery gives roughly 820 to 920 Wh at the outlets.

Our step-by-step method, with a worked outage example, is in what size solar generator you need.

1 kWh solar generators compared

The three 1 kWh solar generators in this table sit in the same size class. Specs come from each maker’s product or spec page, checked September 25, 2026. Product lines change often, so confirm the current listing before you buy.

Model Capacity Rated AC output Surge / peak Chemistry Cycle rating Weight Warranty
EcoFlow DELTA 3 1,024 Wh 1,800 W 3,600 W LFP 4,000 to 80%+ 27.6 lb (12.5 kg) 5 years
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 1,070 Wh 1,500 W 3,000 W LiFePO4 4,000 to 70%+ 23.8 lb (10.8 kg) 3 years + 2 extra at jackery.com
BLUETTI AC180 1,152 Wh 1,800 W 2,700 W LiFePO4 3,500+ to 80% about 35.3 lb (16 kg) 5 years

The Jackery is the lightest, at about 45 Wh per pound by our calculation from the listed specs, but it has the lowest rated output. The BLUETTI stores the most energy, and the EcoFlow has the highest listed surge. Jackery’s surge, weight and cycle figures come from its UK comparison page, since the US product page did not list them.

2 kWh solar generators for home backup

Refrigerators, well pumps and longer outages push most homes into this class.

Model Capacity Rated AC output Surge / peak Chemistry Cycle rating Weight Warranty
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max Plus 2,048 Wh 3,000 W 6,000 W LFP Not listed on spec page 48.7 lb (22.1 kg) 3 years + 2 with app registration
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 2,042 Wh 2,200 W 4,400 W LFP Not listed on product page about 39.5 lb (17.9 kg) 3 years + 2 extra at jackery.com
BLUETTI Elite 200 V2 2,073.6 Wh 2,600 W 3,900 W (resistive loads, Power Lifting) LiFePO4 6,000+ (end percentage not stated) 53.4 lb (24.2 kg) 5 years

BLUETTI lists 3,900 W as a Power Lifting figure for pure resistive loads such as heaters, not as a general surge rating, so the three surge numbers are less comparable than they look. Can a solar generator run a house?

Not a typical whole house on one portable unit. The U.S. Energy Information Administration puts average home use at 10,791 kWh a year (2022), about 29.6 kWh a day, while the units above store 1 to 2 kWh. Most buyers back up critical loads instead: the fridge, lights, internet and medical devices.

How much does a solar generator cost?

Prices change too often to quote, so compare live listings on price per watt-hour. Capacity, output, battery chemistry, bundled panels, expansion and warranty all move the price; our guide to how much a solar generator costs walks through each one.

LiFePO4 or NMC: which battery should you buy?

Every current model in the tables above uses LiFePO4 (LFP) cells. Older and some lighter models use NMC, which packs more energy per pound but carries lower cycle ratings, so check this spec first on a used unit. Our guide to LiFePO4 vs NMC batteries covers cycle life, heat safety and cold-weather charging.

Are refurbished solar generators a good deal?

Refurbished solar generators can be a good deal, but the warranty varies widely by source. EcoFlow says its official refurbished units carry the same warranty as new ones. Jackery’s refurbished listings carry a 6-month warranty. BLUETTI’s warranty policy says coverage is invalid for items bought from unauthorized resellers.

On eBay, only the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved vendor can list an item as Certified Refurbished; “Seller refurbished” means the seller or a third party restored it. Our guide to whether refurbished solar generators are worth it has the full checklist before you buy.

Can you recharge a solar generator with solar panels?

Yes, within the unit’s solar input limit. Listed maximums in our comparison include 500 W for the BLUETTI AC180 and 1,000 W for the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max Plus and BLUETTI Elite 200 V2; panel wattage above the limit will not charge any faster. Our guide to how to charge a solar generator compares wall, solar and car charging times from the makers’ pages.

Plug-in (balcony) solar kits are a different product: they feed your home’s wiring and must stop in a blackout, as our balcony solar guide explains.

Solar generator or gas generator for outages?

A battery unit has no exhaust, so it can sit beside the fridge or a bedside CPAP. A gas generator keeps running as long as it has fuel but makes carbon monoxide: CPSC says to run one outside only, at least 20 feet from the house. Our solar generator vs gas generator page compares them for outages. Every sizing and outage guide is listed in our power stations section.

Before you buy any solar generator: match the model number to the maker’s spec page, check the rated output against your largest appliance, confirm the seller is authorized for the warranty, and plan how you will recharge it.

Frequently asked questions

What size solar generator do I need for a power outage?

Add up the watt-hours your essentials use in a day, then divide by about 0.85 to allow for inverter losses. In our worked example, a full-size refrigerator, four LED bulbs and home internet for 24 hours needs about 2,400 Wh of battery, which is beyond a 1 kWh unit and slightly above a 2 kWh one.

Is a solar generator the same as a portable power station?

Mostly, yes. "Solar generator" is a marketing name for a battery power station that can recharge from solar panels, often sold as a bundle with panels. The battery unit is the same product.

Can I run a solar generator indoors?

Battery power stations have no engine exhaust, which is why they are used indoors during outages. Gas generators are different: CPSC says never to run one inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or shed.

How long does a solar generator last?

Manufacturers rate LiFePO4 models in charge cycles, for example 4,000 cycles to 80% capacity for the EcoFlow DELTA 3, which EcoFlow says means up to 10 years of use, and 3,500+ cycles to 80% for the BLUETTI AC180. Check the percentage, because Jackery rates some models to 70%.

Can you leave a solar generator plugged in all the time?

It depends on the model. EcoFlow says its DELTA can stay plugged in as an emergency power supply, with grid power passing through to your devices. Its general maintenance guide advises against leaving a power station plugged in 24/7 and suggests storing at around 50% charge.

Is it worth buying a refurbished solar generator?

It can be, if the warranty holds. EcoFlow says its official refurbished units carry the same warranty as new, while Jackery gives refurbished units a 6-month warranty. Units from unauthorized resellers may not be covered at all.

What should I check before buying a solar generator on Black Friday?

Confirm the exact model and version against the maker's spec page, since names repeat across generations. Buy from an authorized seller, because EcoFlow and BLUETTI exclude units from unauthorized sellers from warranty. Then check the return window and compare deals on price per watt-hour rather than the discount.
