How Much Does a Solar Generator Cost? What Drives the Price

A solar generator’s cost depends mostly on its battery capacity in watt-hours, then on rated output, battery chemistry, bundled panels, expansion batteries and warranty. Prices move too often to quote reliably, so compare current listings by price per watt-hour. A whole-home system also adds transfer switch or panel installation costs.

Why we don’t list prices

Solar generator prices change weekly with sales, bundles and new models. A figure printed here would be out of date soon after you read it. The live listings further down this page are refreshed from eBay every few hours, and each maker’s own site shows its current price.

How to compare solar generator prices: cost per watt-hour

Capacity is the biggest cost driver, so divide price by capacity.

Cost per Wh = price ÷ capacity (Wh)

This puts a 1,024 Wh unit and a 2,048 Wh unit on the same scale. Use the maker’s rated capacity from its spec page, not the listing title.

Cost per lifetime watt-hour

Cycle ratings change the math for heavy users. Multiply capacity by rated cycles for a rough ceiling on the energy a battery can deliver over its life:

Divide a unit’s price by that last column to compare cost per lifetime kWh. Real delivered energy is lower, because capacity fades over those cycles and EcoFlow’s runtime guide puts AC conversion losses at 10 to 20%. For an emergency unit cycled a few times a year, the plain cost per Wh matters more.

What drives the cost of a solar generator?

Capacity (Wh)

More stored energy costs more. It also sets runtime, so buy the capacity your loads need and no more. Our solar generator sizing method turns an appliance list into a watt-hour target.

Rated output and 240 V

Output sets what can run at once, and it varies a lot at the same capacity. The 4Patriots 1200 (1,030 Wh) lists 1,200 W of continuous output, while the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 (1,024 Wh) lists 2,000 W. Units with 120/240 V output, such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 and Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus, are large home systems built to feed well pumps, central air and other 240 V loads.

Battery chemistry and cycle rating

The EcoFlow, Jackery, BLUETTI and 4Patriots models compared on this site list LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries rated for thousands of cycles. Older NMC units carry lower ratings, such as around 1,000 cycles for Jackery’s Explorer 2000 Pro. LiFePO4 vs NMC explains the tradeoff.

Solar panels in the bundle

“Solar generator” often means a power station sold with panels. 4Patriots, for example, sells the Patriot Power 1200 as a generator with a 100 W panel or as the generator alone. Compare bundles by pricing the battery unit and panels separately.

Expansion batteries

Expandable systems let you spread cost over time. EcoFlow lists the DELTA 3 Plus as expandable to 5 kWh and the DELTA Pro 3 to 12 kWh per unit. Jackery lists the Explorer 5000 Plus as expandable up to 60 kWh. Extra batteries add capacity but not output.

Home wiring and installation

Plugging appliances into the unit costs nothing extra. Feeding house circuits does. Jackery pairs the HomePower 3000 with a manual transfer switch for up to six circuits. EcoFlow says its Smart Home Panel 2 requires installation, with a fee that depends on an assessment of your home.

Warranty

Coverage length varies widely, so weigh it alongside the price. Among 1 kWh models on this site, standard warranties run from 365 days (4Patriots) to 5 years (EcoFlow, BLUETTI and Anker).

How much does a whole house solar generator cost?

Start from energy, not a price tag. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says the average home used 10,791 kWh in 2022, about 29.6 kWh a day. Allowing 15% for inverter losses, one full day would take roughly 35 kWh of battery.

Then count parts from a maker’s spec page:

1. Batteries: how many units and expansion packs reach your kWh target.
2. Inverters: enough rated output, at 240 V if needed, for everything running at once.
3. Home connection: a transfer switch or home panel, plus installation.
4. Recharging: solar panels within the system’s input limit, or a fuel generator.

Can a tax credit lower the cost?

Not for a new purchase under the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit. The IRS says the credit is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. When it applied, battery storage needed at least 3 kWh of capacity. Check state and utility programs separately.

Refurbished solar generators: where the savings are

Refurbished units trade price for warranty. EcoFlow says its official refurbished units carry the same warranty cover as new machines. Jackery’s refurbished listing states a 6-month warranty. 4Patriots marks its pre-owned 1800 as final sale.
