What matters when you choose a solar generator

Five numbers decide whether a unit fits. Everything else is convenience.

• Capacity (Wh): how much energy the battery stores. This sets runtime.
• Rated AC output (W): the continuous load the inverter can carry. It sets which appliances will start at all.
• Surge or peak (W): the short burst allowed when a motor or compressor starts.
• Battery chemistry and cycle rating: LiFePO4 (LFP) models in this guide are rated for 3,500 to 6,000+ cycles. Always check the capacity percentage the rating ends at.
• Warranty terms: length, who qualifies and whether the seller is authorized.

Weight matters too if you camp or move the unit between rooms. In the 1 kWh class compared below, listed weights run from 23.8 lb to about 35.3 lb.

How much capacity does your solar generator need?

Start with watt-hours: watts multiplied by hours of use. Then allow for conversion losses. EcoFlow’s runtime guide suggests multiplying battery capacity by 0.80 to 0.90 for AC loads as a first estimate, so a 1,024 Wh battery gives roughly 820 to 920 Wh at the outlets.

A few things stand out. The Jackery is the lightest, at about 45 Wh per pound by our calculation from the listed specs, but it has the lowest rated output. The BLUETTI stores the most energy, and the EcoFlow has the highest listed surge.

Jackery’s surge, weight and cycle figures above come from its UK comparison page, since the US product page did not list them. The UK page describes 230 V versions, so treat charging times from that page as UK-only.

BLUETTI lists 3,900 W as a Power Lifting figure for pure resistive loads such as heaters, not as a general surge rating. That makes the three surge numbers in this table less comparable than they look.

Can a solar generator run a house?

Not a typical whole house on one portable unit. The U.S. Energy Information Administration puts average home use at 10,791 kWh a year (2022), about 29.6 kWh a day, while the units above store 1 to 2 kWh. Most buyers back up critical loads instead: the fridge, lights, internet and medical devices.

How much does a solar generator cost?

LiFePO4 or NMC: which battery should you buy?

Every current model in the tables above uses LiFePO4 (LFP) cells. Older and some lighter models use NMC, which packs more energy per pound but carries lower cycle ratings. If you are looking at used units, this is the spec to check first. Are refurbished solar generators a good deal?

They can be, but the warranty varies widely by source. EcoFlow says its official refurbished units carry the same warranty as new ones. Jackery’s refurbished listings carry a 6-month warranty. BLUETTI’s warranty policy says coverage is invalid for items bought from unauthorized resellers.

On eBay, the condition label tells you who did the work. Only the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved vendor can list an item as Certified Refurbished. “Seller refurbished” means the eBay seller or a third party restored it. Full details are in are refurbished solar generators worth it.

Can you recharge a solar generator with solar panels?

Yes, within the unit’s solar input limit. Listed maximums in our comparison include 500 W for the BLUETTI AC180 and 1,000 W for the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max Plus and BLUETTI Elite 200 V2. Panel wattage above the limit will not charge any faster.

Check the voltage window as well as watts. BLUETTI lists the AC180’s solar input as 12 to 60 VDC at up to 10 A, so a panel string must fall inside that range.

Solar generator or gas generator for outages?

A gas generator delivers more watts per dollar and refuels in minutes. It also produces carbon monoxide. CPSC says an average of nearly 100 people in the U.S. die each year from CO poisoning caused by portable generators.

A battery solar generator has no exhaust and makes little noise, so it can sit next to the fridge or the bedside CPAP. The tradeoff is fixed stored energy: once the battery is empty, you need wall power, a vehicle or sunlight to refill it.

How to buy a solar generator safely on eBay

• Read the condition label. New, Certified Refurbished, seller refurbished and Used mean different things on eBay, and only some carry a warranty.
• Check the seller. Look at feedback volume and recent comments about batteries or shipping damage.
• Confirm returns. EcoFlow’s own refurbished units are final sale except for manufacturing faults reported within 30 days. Third-party listings set their own terms.
• Ask about warranty eligibility. EcoFlow and BLUETTI both exclude units bought from unauthorized sellers from their warranties.
• Match the model number to the maker’s spec page before trusting a listing’s capacity claim.
