A solar generator (a portable power station you recharge with solar panels) can keep critical loads running through an outage: a refrigerator, lights, internet, a CPAP and phones. It will not run a typical whole house. EIA puts average US home use at about 29.6 kWh a day, while most portable units store 1 to 5 kWh.

What does home backup actually need?

Start with the loads you cannot go without, not the whole house. Most outage plans cover food, light, communication and medical devices.

Critical load Typical energy per day Source
Full-size refrigerator about 1,252 Wh ENERGY STAR median, 457 kWh/yr
Four LED bulbs, 5 hours 180 Wh DOE lighting guide (9 W each)
Modem, router and phone charging about 600 Wh EcoFlow sample test log (25 W)
CPAP, 8 hours about 240 Wh EcoFlow sample test log (30 W)
Total about 2,272 Wh

Divide by 0.85 to allow for inverter losses, and this short list needs about 2,670 Wh of battery for one day. EcoFlow’s runtime guide suggests multiplying battery capacity by 0.80 to 0.90 for AC loads, and 0.85 is the middle of that range.

Your numbers will differ. A U.S. Department of Energy lesson notes that an appliance nameplate shows maximum draw, not average use, so the yellow EnergyGuide label is a better guide for fridges and freezers. Our full step-by-step method is in what size solar generator you need.

Can a solar generator run a house?

A whole house is a different scale. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says the average residential customer used 10,791 kWh in 2022, about 899 kWh a month. That works out to about 29.6 kWh a day.

After inverter losses, one average day would take roughly 35 kWh of stored energy. Compare that with current home backup units from the makers’ own spec pages, checked September 26, 2026:

Model Capacity Rated AC output 240 V output Expandable to
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh 1,800 W Not listed 5 kWh
Jackery HomePower 3000 3,072 Wh 3,600 W No (120 V outlets) Not listed
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 4,096 Wh 4,000 W Yes (120/240 V) 12 kWh per unit
Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus 5,040 Wh 7,200 W Yes (120/240 V) Up to 60 kWh

So the honest answer is yes only at the large end. A single DELTA Pro 3 with two extra batteries stores about 12 kWh, which is about a third of an average home’s day once inverter losses are counted. EcoFlow lists larger totals for multi-unit systems paired with its Smart Home Panel 2.

The cheaper path for most homes is partial backup: power the fridge, lights, internet and medical devices, and let the rest go dark.

How big a solar generator for a 2000 sq ft house?

Floor area does not tell you energy use. Two houses of the same size can differ widely because of heating fuel, air conditioning, water heating and how many people live there. Use this method instead.

  1. For whole-house backup, find the kWh used on your last few electric bills and divide by the days in each billing period.
  2. For partial backup, list only the loads you need and add their daily watt-hours, as in the table above.
  3. Divide by 0.85 for inverter losses.
  4. Check output, not just capacity. The rated AC output must cover everything running at once, and the surge rating must start your largest motor.
  5. Check voltage. Well pumps, central air, electric dryers and ranges often run on 240 V. Only some models, such as the DELTA Pro 3 and Explorer 5000 Plus, list 240 V output.

Expandable batteries: start small, grow later

Expansion is how portable units stretch toward home backup. EcoFlow lists the DELTA 3 Plus as expandable to 5 kWh with extra batteries. The DELTA Pro 3 expands to 12 kWh per unit with two extra batteries. Jackery lists the Explorer 5000 Plus as expandable up to 60 kWh.

Check the rated output as well as the capacity. Extra batteries add hours, but they do not raise the inverter’s wattage limit.

How do you connect a solar generator to your home?

There are three common setups, from simplest to most involved.

  • Plug appliances into the unit. No wiring changes. This is how most portable units are used, and it suits a fridge, lamps and a router.
  • A manual transfer switch. Jackery says the HomePower 3000 can pair with a manual transfer switch to feed up to six essential home circuits.
  • A smart home panel. EcoFlow pairs the DELTA Pro 3 with its Smart Home Panel 2, which EcoFlow says requires installation before use, with a fee that depends on an assessment.

Keeping devices on when the grid drops

Some units double as an uninterruptible power supply while plugged into the wall. EcoFlow lists a 10 ms UPS on the DELTA Pro 3, and Jackery lists about 20 ms on the HomePower 3000. That keeps a router or CPAP running through the switchover without a reboot, but check your device’s own requirements.

Recharging during a multi-day outage

A battery that cannot refill only buys time. Solar input limits vary widely: Jackery lists up to 1,000 W of solar input on the HomePower 3000 and EcoFlow lists 2,600 W total on the DELTA Pro 3. How many panels a fridge needs depends on your location and season, which we work through in what size solar generator runs a refrigerator.

Frequently asked questions

Can a solar generator run a house?

Not a typical whole house on one small unit. EIA puts average US home use at about 29.6 kWh a day, while most portable units store 1 to 5 kWh. Large expandable systems wired through a transfer switch or home panel can cover much more, but most buyers back up selected circuits.

What size solar generator do I need for a 2000 sq ft house?

Square footage alone does not set the answer. Take the daily kWh from your electric bill for whole-house backup, or add up only the loads you must keep running, then divide by about 0.85 for inverter losses. Check 240 V needs separately.

Can a solar generator run central air conditioning?

Only large 240 V models, and not for long. EcoFlow says the DELTA Pro 3 can power a 3-ton central AC, and Jackery says the Explorer 5000 Plus can run a 5-ton AC. Air conditioning drains even these batteries quickly, so plan for solar or another recharge source.

Do I need a transfer switch for a solar generator?

Not if you plug appliances straight into the unit. To feed house circuits, use the maker's transfer switch or home panel. Jackery pairs the HomePower 3000 with a manual transfer switch for up to six circuits, and EcoFlow says its Smart Home Panel 2 requires installation.

How long can a solar generator power a refrigerator in an outage?

It depends on capacity. Using the median ENERGY STAR full-size rating, a 3,072 Wh unit runs a fridge for about 50 hours and a 1,024 Wh unit for about 17 hours, before any solar recharging.
