LiFePO4 (LFP) is the better chemistry for most solar generator buyers. Makers rate LFP units for thousands of cycles, while Jackery rates its NMC Explorer 2000 Pro at around 1,000. NIOSH testing also found NMC cells build far higher pressure in thermal runaway. NMC’s real advantage is less weight for the same energy, which matters when you carry the unit.

Every current model in our EcoFlow vs Jackery vs Bluetti comparison lists LFP cells. NMC mostly matters now if you are buying an older model or a used unit.

Which lasts longer, LiFePO4 or NMC?

LiFePO4, by a wide margin in makers’ ratings. EcoFlow’s NCM guide puts NCM at 1,000 to 2,000 full cycles before noticeable degradation, and LFP at 3,000 to over 6,000.

Jackery’s own lineup shows the gap within one brand. It rates the NMC Explorer 2000 Pro at around 1,000 cycles before capacity drops to 80%. It rates the LFP Explorer 2000 Plus at 4,000 cycles to 70%.

Read the end percentage, not just the cycle count

A cycle rating is only meaningful with its end point. Jackery defines cycle life as the cycles before the battery can no longer recharge to over 80% of original capacity, yet rates some LFP models to 70%. EcoFlow rates the DELTA 3 to 80%+, and BLUETTI rates the AC180 to 80%.

So 4,000 cycles to 70% and 4,000 cycles to 80% are not the same promise. The 80% rating leaves you more usable capacity at the end.

How deep you discharge changes the count

Jackery notes that shallower discharges give more cycles. Staying between 100% and 50% rather than draining to empty stretches battery life, whichever chemistry you own.

How long does a solar generator last?

For current LiFePO4 models, makers translate cycle ratings into about a decade. Their claims, from each product page:

Model Cycle rating Maker’s lifespan claim
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 4,000 cycles to 80% Up to 10 years of reliable use
Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 4,000 cycles to at least 80% Up to 10 years
Jackery HomePower 3000 4,000 cycles to 70%+ More than 10 years
4Patriots Patriot Power 1200 about 4,000 cycles, keeping at least 80% 11 years of regular use

The arithmetic behind those claims is simple: 4,000 full cycles at one a day is almost 11 years. An NMC unit rated for around 1,000 cycles would reach its rating in under three years at that pace.

Most home backup units cycle far less than once a day, so storage habits matter as much as the rating. EcoFlow’s care guide suggests keeping a stored unit at around 50% charge, checking it every 3 to 6 months and storing it between 32 and 77°F (0 to 25°C).

Can you leave a solar generator plugged in all the time?

It depends on the model, and the makers’ own advice differs by product.

  • Built for it: EcoFlow’s DELTA FAQ says the DELTA can stay plugged in as an emergency power supply. With the AC input connected, your devices run on grid power, and the unit switches to battery if the grid fails.
  • UPS switchover times: EcoFlow lists under 10 ms for the DELTA 3, Anker under 10 ms for the SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 and Jackery about 20 ms for the HomePower 3000.
  • General caution: EcoFlow’s maintenance guide says leaving a power station plugged in 24/7 is not advisable, because it can stress the battery over the long term even with overcharge protection.

The practical answer: if you need standby power for a router or CPAP, use a model the maker describes as a UPS or EPS and follow its manual. For a unit kept only for outages, store it partly charged and top it up on a schedule instead.

Is LiFePO4 safer than NMC?

Research points that way. NIOSH researchers measured thermal runaway in NMC 811 cells (18650 size, model MH1) sealed inside enclosures. They found the NMC pressures were significantly higher than those measured earlier for iron phosphate cells under comparable conditions.

The difference was large. To keep pressure under the 125 psig limit for explosion-proof enclosures, the NMC cell needed about 287 times its own volume in free space. An LFP cell needed about 34 times its volume.

That study was designed for mining equipment, not consumer power stations. It still shows the direction of the difference: when an NMC cell fails, it releases energy more violently.

EcoFlow’s NCM guide also notes NMC depends on a sophisticated battery management system to monitor temperature and prevent overheating. Both chemistries use a BMS in power stations.

Why would anyone choose NMC?

Weight. EcoFlow’s NCM guide says high nickel content gives NMC superior energy storage per kilogram, which is why it suits electric vehicles and portable electronics where every pound counts.

For a power station that lives in a closet for outages, that advantage is small. For a unit you hike with, it can matter. Among current LFP models, weight per watt-hour still varies: by our math from listed specs, the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 stores about 45 Wh per pound, and the BLUETTI AC180 about 33.

Cold weather and storage for LiFePO4 power stations

Temperature affects both chemistries. Makers publish specific ranges, so check yours.

  • BLUETTI AC180: operating range 0 to 40°C (32 to 104°F), with output limited to 1,500 W between 30 and 40°C.
  • EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max Plus: optimal 20 to 30°C (68 to 86°F); discharge from -10 to 45°C (14 to 113°F).
  • Jackery: recommends storing within about 0 to 40°C, keeping at least 20% charge and recharging every 3 months.

EcoFlow’s home storage guide recommends enabling preheat or charge limits in cold garages, then charging only within the safe window. If your unit has no heating feature, bring it indoors to warm up before you charge it.

LiFePO4 or NMC for home backup, camping and RVs?

Home backup. A unit that sits charged for storms and cycles a few times a year will rarely reach the end of either chemistry’s rating. Safety and storage life matter more here, which favors LFP. Jackery’s advice to keep stored units above 20% and top them up every 3 months applies to both.

Camping and hiking. This is where NMC’s weight advantage shows up. If you carry the unit far from the car, a lighter NMC model can make sense, as long as you accept a lower cycle rating.

RVs, vans and off-grid cabins. Daily solar charging means hundreds of cycles a year. At that pace, a rating of around 1,000 cycles could be used up in about three years, while a 4,000-cycle LFP rating stretches far longer. LFP is the clear pick.

Does chemistry change how much runtime you get?

Not directly. Runtime depends on rated capacity and conversion losses, so the same sizing math applies to both. See what a 1000Wh power station can run for worked runtimes. Chemistry changes how that capacity holds up over years of use.

Should you buy a used NMC solar generator?

Only at a price that reflects its shorter life. An NMC unit rated for around 1,000 cycles, bought used, may already have spent a large share of them. Our guide to refurbished power stations explains warranty terms, which matter even more for older units.

A new LFP unit is the safer long-term bet for most people.

Frequently asked questions

Is LiFePO4 better than NMC for a solar generator?

For most buyers, yes. Makers rate LiFePO4 power stations for thousands of cycles, and NIOSH research found NMC cells produce far higher pressures in thermal runaway. NMC's main advantage is lower weight for the same energy.

How long does a solar generator last?

EcoFlow says the DELTA 3 Plus's 4,000 cycles to 80% capacity give up to 10 years of reliable use, and Anker and Jackery make similar 10-year claims for LiFePO4 models. Actual life depends on how often you cycle it, how deeply you discharge it and the temperatures it sees.

Can you leave a solar generator plugged in all the time?

Some models are designed for it. EcoFlow says its DELTA can stay plugged in as an emergency power supply, passing grid power to your devices. EcoFlow's general care guide still advises against leaving a power station plugged in 24/7, so follow your model's manual.

Can you charge a LiFePO4 solar generator in freezing weather?

Check the manual. BLUETTI lists 32 to 104°F (0 to 40°C) as the AC180's operating range, and EcoFlow advises enabling preheat or charge limits in cold garages. Bring the unit indoors to warm up before charging if your model has no heating.

How do I know if a power station is LiFePO4 or NMC?

Look at the battery chemistry line on the spec sheet. LiFePO4 may appear as LFP or lithium iron phosphate; NMC may appear as NCM or ternary lithium. A cycle rating around 1,000 or lower is a hint that you are looking at NMC.

Are NMC power stations unsafe?

Not inherently. They rely on the battery management system to control temperature and charging. Follow the maker's manual, keep the unit within its listed temperature range and contact the maker if a unit is damaged or behaves abnormally.
