A solar generator needs about 1,500 Wh of battery to run a typical full-size refrigerator for 24 hours, and about 2,900 Wh to add an upright freezer. Those figures use ENERGY STAR median ratings plus 15% inverter losses. The unit’s surge rating must also cover the compressor’s startup spike, which EcoFlow puts at several times running watts.
How much energy do a fridge and freezer use?
Less than their nameplates suggest. A U.S. Department of Energy lesson explains that a refrigerator only draws its rated wattage while the compressor runs, and the compressor cycles on and off. The yellow EnergyGuide label’s annual kWh is the better number to size from.
We pulled the ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator and freezer datasets in September 2026 and took the median rating for each type.
| Appliance (ENERGY STAR median) | Models in dataset | kWh per year | Wh per day | Average watts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-size refrigerator (all types) | 2,963 | 457 | about 1,252 | about 52 |
| Top-freezer refrigerator | 832 | 363 | about 995 | about 41 |
| Side-by-side refrigerator | 123 | 640 | about 1,753 | about 73 |
| Upright freezer | 497 | 438 | about 1,200 | about 50 |
| Chest freezer | 9 | 218 | about 597 | about 25 |
| Compact freezer | 162 | 244 | about 668 | about 28 |
The chest freezer figure rests on only nine certified models, so treat it as a rough guide. Your own label is always better than a median.
What size solar generator runs a refrigerator and freezer?
Add the daily watt-hours, then divide by 0.85. EcoFlow’s runtime guide suggests multiplying battery capacity by 0.80 to 0.90 for AC loads, and 0.85 is the middle.
| Setup (24 hours) | Wh per day | Battery needed (÷ 0.85) | Size class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-size fridge | about 1,252 | about 1,470 Wh | 2 kWh class |
| Fridge plus chest freezer | about 1,849 | about 2,180 Wh | 2 kWh class, near the limit |
| Fridge plus upright freezer | about 2,452 | about 2,880 Wh | 3 kWh class |
| Side-by-side fridge plus upright freezer | about 2,953 | about 3,470 Wh | 3 to 4 kWh class |
A 1 kWh class unit still helps. With about 870 usable Wh from 1,024 Wh, it runs a median full-size fridge for about 17 hours. See what a 1000Wh solar generator can run for the full table.
Why startup surge matters
Every time the compressor starts, it pulls a short spike. EcoFlow’s refrigerator guide says a fridge may need 2 to 3 times its usual power to start. Its surge power guide lists refrigerators and freezers at 3 to 5 times running watts, for a few seconds.
The two EcoFlow articles disagree, so size for the higher figure if your fridge is older or large. Compare the result with the unit’s surge or peak rating, not its rated output. If both a fridge and a freezer are plugged in, their compressors can start at the same moment.
How many solar panels do you need to run a refrigerator?
Enough to put back what the fridge takes out each day. The method has three steps.
- Daily battery energy: about 1,470 Wh for a median full-size fridge (from the table above).
- Peak sun hours for your location and month: the daily solar energy per square meter, in kWh/m²/day. NLR’s PVWatts calculator reports this as “solar radiation” for any US address.
- Panel watts = daily battery energy ÷ (peak sun hours x 0.86). The 0.86 is our allowance for real-world losses; we entered 14% system losses in PVWatts.
Here is what that gives for a fixed panel tilted 30° to the south, using PVWatts version 8 data we pulled on September 26, 2026. Portable panels laid flat or poorly aimed will collect less.
| Location | Peak sun hours, annual | Peak sun hours, December | Panel watts for one fridge, annual average | Panel watts for one fridge, December |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix, AZ | 6.60 | 5.30 | about 260 W | about 320 W |
| Houston, TX | 5.16 | 3.76 | about 330 W | about 460 W |
| Chicago, IL | 4.55 | 2.43 | about 380 W | about 710 W |
| Seattle, WA | 3.99 | 1.47 | about 430 W | about 1,170 W |
Add an upright freezer and the battery target rises to about 2,880 Wh, so multiply those panel figures by about 1.96. In Chicago in December, that is roughly 1,380 W of panels.
Check the solar input limit
Panels above a unit’s limit will not charge it faster. Listed maximums vary widely: 500 W on the BLUETTI AC180, 600 W on the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 and 1,000 W on the Jackery HomePower 3000. A winter fridge-and-freezer setup in the northern US can exceed what a mid-size unit accepts.

Tips to stretch fridge runtime
- Start cold and keep doors shut. Fewer openings mean fewer compressor cycles.
- Use your own label. An older or larger fridge can use far more than the median.
- Charge during the day, run overnight. Solar input while the fridge runs reduces the battery you need.
- Consider a separate chest freezer. By the ENERGY STAR medians, chest models use about half the energy of upright ones.

Frequently asked questions
What size solar generator do I need to run a refrigerator and freezer?
For 24 hours with a median full-size fridge and upright freezer, plan on about 2,900 Wh of battery, which points to a 3 kWh class unit. A fridge with a chest freezer needs about 2,200 Wh, since chest freezers rate lower.
How long will a 2000 watt solar generator run a fridge?
It depends on watt-hours, not watts. A 2 kWh class unit with about 2,048 Wh delivers roughly 1,740 Wh on AC, which runs a median full-size ENERGY STAR fridge for about 33 hours.
How many solar panels do I need to run a refrigerator and freezer?
It depends on where you live and the season. By our PVWatts-based math, a median fridge alone needs roughly 320 to 460 W of panels in December in Phoenix or Houston, about 700 W in Chicago and over 1,100 W in Seattle. Add a freezer and those figures nearly double.
What is the smallest solar generator that can power a refrigerator?
One whose rated output and surge cover your fridge's startup. EcoFlow's guides put startup draw at 2 to 3 times running watts in one article and 3 to 5 times in another. The 1 kWh class units compared on this site list 2,400 W or more of surge, but a small unit will only run a full-size fridge for part of a day.
Can a solar generator run a chest freezer?
Yes, and chest freezers are among the easiest loads. The median ENERGY STAR chest freezer in our pull was 218 kWh a year, about 600 Wh a day, though only nine chest models were in the certified list.
